Smartphone data roaming guide

This information is to offer advice on how to keep data roaming charges to a minimum and how to turn off data settings on iPhones, iPads, Androids and BlackBerry devices whilst roaming.

Top tips for roaming...

  • First check there is a roaming agreement and the charges involved whilst roaming. Click here for more information.
  • Use Wi-Fi networks where possible. Most major airports and hotels usually have Wi-Fi availability.
  • Turn off the data functions on your iPhone, iPad, Android or BlackBerry device by following the below instructions.

Using your iPhone/iPad whilst roaming 
The inclusive data provided with your pay monthly plan does not include data that you use while abroad.  The cost of using data while roaming increases significantly, so this guide takes you through step-by-step instructions of how to change the settings on your iPhone/iPad to help you stay in control.

How to turn off your data settings whilst roaming:
Delete ALL APN Settings:
1.  Go to Settings> General> Network>
Cellular Data Network>
2.  Delete airtel-ci-gprs.com from the
APN field – press Network
3.  Turn off Data Roaming
4.  Turn off Cellular Data

How to turn on your data settings whilst in the Channel Islands:
Recreate your APN Settings:
1.  Go to Settings> General> Network>
2.  Turn Cellular Data Network on
3.  Turn Data Roaming on
4.  Go to Cellular Data Network>
5.  In APN add - airtel-ci-gprs.com




Using your Android phone whilst roaming
The inclusive data provided with your pay monthly plan does not include data that you use while abroad.  The cost of using data while roaming increases significantly, so this guide takes you through step-by-step instructions of how to change the settings on your Android to help you stay in control.

How to turn off your data settings whilst roaming:
Delete ALL APN Settings:
1.  Go to Menu> Settings> Wireless & Networks>
Mobile Network>
2.  Open Access Point Names (APN)
3.  Open APN
4.  Go to Menu > Delete APN
5. Repeat for each APN

How to turn on your data settings whilst in the Channel Islands:
Recreate your APN Settings:
1.  Go to Menu> Settings> Wireless & Networks
2.  Open Access Point Names (APN)
3.  Go to Menu> New APN>
4.  In APN add - airtel-ci-gprs.com



Using your BlackBerry phone whilst roaming
The inclusive data provided with your pay monthly plan does not include data that you use while abroad.  The cost of using data while roaming increases significantly, so this guide takes you through step-by-step instructions of how to change the settings on your BlackBerry to help you stay in control.

How to turn off your data settings whilst roaming:
This should be carried out before you go abroad.
1.  Go to Menu> Manage Connections>Mobile Network Options>
2.  Ensure that Data Services ‘While Roaming’ are turned off or turn ALL DATA services off.

How to turn on your data settings whilst in the Channel Islands:
Remember that if you have turned off ALL
Data Services, you will need to turn this back on for your BlackBerry to work.  If you have selected ‘Data Off While Roaming’ you can leave this option set to safeguard you when you are going abroad in the future.
